DR. STEVEN WEBSTER
Steven Webster retired in 2004 as Senior Marine Biologist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Steve received his AB (1961), MAT (1966) and PhD (1971) in biology, all from Stanford University. He taught invertebrate zoology at San Jose State University until 1978 when he and three friends began brainstorming the idea of a public aquarium on Cannery Row in Monterey, CA. He has been involved with the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium since its conception, first as Project Coordinator and then as Director of Education and Senior Marine Biologist.
Steve continues to volunteer as an interpretive guide at the aquarium and teaches Monterey Bay natural history classes for staff and volunteers. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the York School, the Sea Studios Foundation and the Friends of Hopkins Marine Station. He served on and is past Chair of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. Steve has been a diving instructor and underwater photographer for 55 years. He is a popular speaker on natural history topics ranging from Monterey Bay to the Caribbean, the Sea of Cortez and the tropical Pacific. He has led SCUBA diving excursions to Fiji and Indonesia for the last twenty years and has been documenting the relationship between coral reef health (read: demise) and climate change.
One of the best things about traveling and diving with Steve is that he loves to share his knowledge of the corals and other critters. He's been known to talk at length about the marine environment and sea creatures that we've found on our dives. Traveling and diving with Steve is always both fun and educational, and if we're lucky, he'll be in fine form on our cruise to enrich our dive experience with interesting tidbits about the marine life we encounter.
